Archos TV+ 250 GB (Silver)

Reviews of Archos TV+ 250 GB (Silver)

1.) Awesome Digital Media Player
Reviewed by: scottypotty Grayslake, IL USA
Rating:
This is a digital media player for your home entertainment center. It has the same operating system as the Archos portable video players (like the 605 wifi). It has all of the formats of AV inputs that you would need but you can only use one at a time which can be a pain if you want to switch. It can play a wide variety of file formats as well (just like the 605). You will need to buy two plugins in order to play MPEG2 with AC3 audio and H264 files. Yes it does play XVID/DIVX.

For me, the main selling point for this unit is the network connectablity. I plugged in an Ethernet cable (it has wifi as well, but that's slower) and it lets me browse the other computers on my network just like the explorer in windows. I can then play any media file I find videos, music, or pictures. You can also use the media sharing feature of Windows Media Player 11 and share network files that way as well. This lets me us this unit as my own on demand system. I can dump all the videos we want to watch over the next few months and have them in neatly organized folders. The kids can have their movies all in one place and watch all the SpongeBob they want. I plan to have all our Christmas movies dumped and on the unit so we don't have to hunt for them next year.

Archos TV can record form an external sources as well, but I already have a PVR for that, so I won't be using it. It uses an IR blaster type setup to control the cable/satellite box for recording. You get one year of free program guides when you register.

Notes:
- You will need to update to the latest firmware before you do anything else. I couldn't get the auto update to work the first time so you may have to download the firmware via a computer and move it over to the unit.
- I had trouble getting a thumb drive to work in the USB port. I think it pulled too much power. My Archos 504 hooked up no problem. I'm sure any powered USB drive will work fine.
- When you browse your network for the first time, it will take a long time for it to find other computers on the network. Just let it search. Mine took about 30 minutes. After that, it finds them instantly.
- Just like the 605 you have to bookmark videos manually in order to come back and resume were you left off. It will do just one video automatically. This will be lost when you play another video though. I requested an auto-bookmark feature but who knows if they will look into it.
- You can copy files to the unit through the network connection, or by using a USB cable. The unit shows up on your computer as a Drive.
- It can play VOB files from DVDs you own. If you hook up the SPDIF cable, you will get Dolby Digital AC3 sound.
- This is a new unit and they are working on fixing bugs as they are found. It's not going to be perfect for a little while. It is very cool though.

First one was defective and amazon sent a return form immediately and even before i shipped the item back they had already sent a new one. 3.) Great Device, still a little rough around the edges
Reviewed by: O. Prusak New York, NY
Rating:
I've had this device for over a month now and here are my impressions.

The first thing I had to do was to update the firmware. This was a REAL pain the rear. The device has an "auto-update" feature, but it doesn't seem to work without the latest version of the firmware. ACK. Newer buyers might have a newer version pre-installed.

Once I finally got the latest version of the firmware and had purchased a couple of the plugins, I must say it's a really cool machine.

My main purpose was to put all of my kids DVDs on it - this seems to be a common theme :)

I won't go over the specs, but here are few things you should know before you buy (in no particular order).

This device is NOT rock solid. Overall, it's stable "enough", but about once a week I run into a situation where I need to reboot the device. Personally, that's acceptable.

The dual USB mode is awesome. I can either attach it to my PC and copy stuff over (I use the mode where it looks like an external HD, but it also has "media player 11 support" whatever that is) OR I can attach an external HD to it and copy stuff over via the interface on my TV.

The main functions in the interface are easy to use and pretty intuitive, but some of the more advanced stuff took me a while to figure out. The manual wasn't always that helpful either. Still, this is just a one time thing.

The remote sucks big time. I understand they wanted something with a keyboard for web browsing (and file administration which is nice), but I really don't like the "feel" of it. 99% of the time there are just 8 buttons you'll be using. I've considered getting a learning remote to use most of the time.

It's great that it can play .vob files (these are the raw video files on DVDs) but I REALLY wish it could have played a directory with all of the DVD files as if it were a DVD. lots of video players on my PC can do this.

The TV recording function is "nice" but only useful if you know exactly what time and channel the program is in advance. The TV listing is purely an online TV guide you can browse and set to record something. On the other hand, it's nice to have a real time digital recorder to convert old VHS tapes or just record what I'm watching now (if I have to leave in the middle).

If you're recoding something from TV, the IR transmitter is on the front of the device. There is no "extender" like the tivo has. This means you need to either (a) change the channel in advance (b) have the tv+ facing your cable box (c) have something in front of the tv+ that will reflect the IR signal back to your cable box. As I said earlier, the recording functionality is "nice" but don't think this will replace a tivo.

The browser is surprisingly usable. I was able to do just about everything including 99% of the flash based sites I tried.

I wish it directly supported streaming audio (Internet Radio) like shoutcast.com. It DOES support flash through the browser, including sound. I tried to use pandora.com (it uses streaming audio via flash) but it never fully loaded the page.

If you only have composite video (just a single "standard" connector) then the Apple TV isn't even an option! My TV is 7 years old and composite is the only video connector I have. Apple TV does NOT have composite (which is one of the reasons I didn't get it).

When you're browsing your video files, it shows a thumbnail for the video (nice) but the really cool thing is that the thumbnail will show about 10 seconds from the video when you "hover" over it. This is VERY helpful for my 4 year old daughter.

My final thoughts would be that if you're a bit technical and want the ultimate flexibility - get the archos TV.

4.) Great networked DVR
Reviewed by: Curtis
Rating:
I have many Archos products and the gen 5 series is the best of the lot. Archos TV+ is everything they promised. You can network it with your computer or other Archos wifi enabled units. The TV+ does not include a tuner so you will need a tuner source such as a VCR,DVR,cable box or a sat receiver. TV+ controls the tuner source with a built in infrared emitter and scheduled recordings are easily programmed with an on screen menu. I would give the TV+ five stars but I'm having a problem with setting up some scheduled recordings that requires a firmware update. I'm still waiting for it but Archos tech support told me it would be fixed. I'm happy with my TV+!

5.) Very good for the price
Reviewed by: Wink NJ, USA

I bought the Archos TV+ (250Gig) for my birthday and I was very pleased.

Some things to take note of (confirming what others have said in reviews and my own experience)
1)the set up is not complicated in of itself, it was complicated for me because of how my own current set up was (tv, vcr,dvd and cable box). After about an hour I had everything set up the way I needed it.

2) the customer service as others have said is terrible! Fortunately the instruction manual you can download off of Archos.com, gave me the information I needed with regard to downloading plugins.

3)They changed the Archos website so you can now only register the TV+ using the TV+ itself and for the signing up of the TV scheduler. after that if you want to download plugins you have to use your computer.
3a) the only plug in I needed was the internet plug in. customer service explained that they removed the ability to download directly to the TV+ a few weeks ago and that you would have to disconnect the TV+, connect via USB to your computer to transfer any and all Plug ins. THIS IN NOT TRUE. I ordered the internet plug in, downloaded it to my computer and used a flash drive to transfer this to the TV+. The TV+ automatically picked up the plug in and installed. This took (from ordering to loading to the TV+) all of about 10 minutes (I had to walk upstairs, so it would have taken less time w/out that).
4) Recording movies if fairly easy, I'm still learning more of what I can do with this. but it is very neat.
5) The quality is very good
6) web browsing- a little slow (but hey this is not a computer)but a very cool feature to have, so you have more than one option to check your email and or research on the web. Sites that have a lot of flash content (Hulu.com etc.) can lock up at times, but again, I'm not disappointed as this is not a replacement for a computer, but rather another option to check things out.

In short, I would totally recommend the TV+ to anyone who wants to record shows, and browse the internet.

Good product and compact! I was looking at purchasing the Apple Tv for quite sometime, but I was waiting to see if Apple Tv would incorporate web surfing. I mean isn't it a computer after all? Shouldn't I have the ability to browse the internet? The Archos Tv was all that I was looking for. Web browser, Tvio, hard drive all wrapped up in one. The Content Portal is okay, but I can watch Youtube videos and Google Videos with a click of the keypad.
Pros: does what it says it does, download videos from the internet, watch streaming media, access my computer files
Cons: Keypad could have been better, Purchasing additional plugins becomes expensive

7.) Has potential, but purposely hobbled by Archos to get more money
Reviewed by: greg peterson Midwest, USA
Rating:
OK, first here's what the Archos TV+ will NOT do (as there is a lot of confusion out there)

1. It will not surf the Internet. This requires an additional $30 plug-in.
2. It will not play surround sound encoded movies. It's not that you just don't get the surround sound, it won't play the movie period. This requires another $20 plug-in.
3. It will not play H.264 (.mov or .mv4) movies. This will run you yet another $20 for the plug-in.
4. It will not record TV shows. It does not have a built in tuner, so you need to attempt a Rube Goldberg type setup where the Archos TV+ controls a real recording device (VCR, DVD Recorder) to turn it on, change the channel, etc... (Didn't work with my 2 year old DVD recorder.)

So, it will cost you another $70 to realize the potential of the Archos TV+. (Plus the as yet defined cost of the 'TV Program Guide' that is only free for one year.)

Without the additional money, any attempt to play a movie other than a MPEG-4 .AVI with (only) Stero sound will bring up message that you cannot play the file and need to purchase one of the various plug-ins, with a convenient button that lets you 'buy it now'. There is little doubt about their strategy to make more money here.

The Archos TV+ also has this weird Bright White top to it (check out my photo in the product images). All of the Archos photos for the TV+ show a distinctly silver top, and in multiple calls to Archos they were even confused about the color. I got stories that a few had white tops, that there were many different colors of tops out there, then finally as I went up the chain (I really wanted the silver), that ALL of them had a white top despite what the Archos photos show. The white top really sticks out like a sore thumb amid the rest of the A/V equipment.

Now that the random, things you wouldn't expect are out of the way, the reason I got the Archos TV+ was to get beyond the piles of DVD's that my kids watch. The DVD's get misplaced, or left out and scratched, etc... and the TV+ does a great job in storing them! It is also easy for my kids (Hi Kat and Maddy; ages 5 and 8) to browse the videos and select what they want to watch. Let me be clear, it is worth the price just for that. It is also fanless, so no extra noise.

Connecting through a home WiFi network was fairly painless (just set up a home network workgroup and share out a folder on your PC), although even with a strong signal from my router (about 20 ft away), it will still drop the connection about 20% of the time, and I will need to re-start the transfer.

So, I really like the TV+ to keep the kids shows on, and once I got my conversion workflow set up to avoid all of the annoying 'can't play this file buy the plug-in' messages, using it has really smoothed out.

You don't get HD quality, the Archos customer service is totally lacking (policy appears to be to tell you anything just to get you off the phone vs. get you a real answer), but if you can control your video file conversion to align to it's strict spec's, it's a nice little addition to your home entertainment system. (Except that white top!)

After 3 weeks of using this device, I have mixed feelings towards it:

- This is an useful product, and I'm sure there is a market for it;

- The wifi and network capabilities are great and the hardisk is of decent size;

- The setting up was easy, as was the connection to my wifi network;

- It is easy to program a recording but it could be simplified. Actually the whole interface is workable, but it could be more user friendly;

- The price is a little too high, considering that it comes without a web browser and some video codecs, all of which have to be purchased apart if you want to access the full potential of this machine;

- I didn't like the quality of the videos I've recorded. I got some fuzziness and sombre images, even after tweaking the recording settings;

- I had the machine in my bedroom. For some reason, every night around 3 or 4 AM, the hardisk began to whirr for some minutes. It wasn't too loud, but it was enough to wake me up.

All in all, I took the decision to return this item, hoping that it'll be perfected in the future.

First time anything has crapped out before the warranty has expired. Contacting Archos was a nightmare. The 250gb hard drive had Obviously stopped working, or a power supply issue was going on. Any owner of this product can tell You when booting the hard drive is very Audible. 26 Days later I am still waiting for archos to get back to me with A SHIPPING LABEL for my product! I was a huge archos fan after I picked up a portable unit from them a few years ago. It was great. So I bought this as soon as it was available. Its horrible. I only was ever interested in playing back video with it. Not playing music or not recording, so I dont know if those actually even work. Probably not. First I had to buy a plugin to actually play my videos. Thats so ridiculous, but I did it anyway. It did play my videos, but way way worse than my pc ever did. The unit just doesnt have enough horsepower to play them without them being choppy (these are big mpeg2 files) The ui is horrendous! fast forward and rewind are just plain unusable, as is the bookmark feature. I also tried the websurfing plugin. Unusable! The mouse is horrible, the keyboard is too delayed to do anything useful. good luck trying to type an email!
I waited and tried all the latest firmwares, but nothing made this pos any better. And then it was too late to return it.
Please run, dont walk, away from this nightmare!

12.) Worse Ever!

This is the worse product ever. It works fine physically and you can watch movies that you convert, download, etc as long as they are of a certain format but if you would like to use it as a DVR and record TV you are out of luck.

The worse one is that they advertise on their site that you can record using a local directory. You know pick a directory, hit record and it put's in everything for you. Well that is not working and has not been working for months. The reply from their tech support is "I have been told the service will be unavailable for a while. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.". Translation for Archos of a while is usually 2-6 months.

Originally when I bought it I was stuck without a directory for 2 months, they finally got it going. I then switched providers last month and for a month I get the same reply back, in fact that option has been removed from the user options on their web page.

The other thing is that this device does not control certain devices. What I mean is that it will not turn on certain devices in particularly the Motorola devices from Verizon FIOS. Which means you either leave your cable box on all the time or you are stuck with a dust magnet sitting in your entertainment center.

DO NOT BUY!

13.) plug-ins...plug-ins...plug-ins

I messed up, and didn't read the reviews here before I bought this junker.

On the good side, it is really easy to setup. Also, my Harmony recognized it right off, so the remote works perfectly. Thanks Logitech!

Other than that, this device is crippled out of the box. All it can do, is play MP3 and AVI files. Anything else you want to do requires a plug-in. Now, you may be thinking, most media players and web browsers need plug-ins. True, but they're usually free. Not the Archos plug-ins. They're $26-$40 (prices are in Euros 20-30e)each. All-in-all it's about $120 worth of plug-ins.

Even the web browser itself is a plug-in. That's right, no web browser included...that's another $40 (30e). c'mon! BTW: It's Opera. Why am I paying for Opera?

No Winamp support either, thanks Shoutcast for (finally) creating your own, in-browser, player. Now I can play Shoutcast, with my $40 web browser.

There are plenty of other media extenders on the market, that do not need additional, expensive add-ons. If that's what you're looking for, get one of them, not this. They may not record TV, but this one doesn't either, without a subscription to the TV Program Guide (another $26 - not counted in the plug-ins).

The Archos TV+ is a just a hole in your media center, for you to throw money into.

14.) The Hidden Cost of the Archos TV +
Reviewed by: thezoed Utah, USA

I bought the Archos TV + 250 GB, tried it for a day and then quickly returned it. In order to get a fully functioning Archos TV you must download plugins off a difficult to navigate website. Expect to pay $89 to get all the features on top of the original price tag. Expect for problems to occur and to find very few answers.

One such problem is the headache of registering the product. Archos, untrusting of their customer base not only requires a product key hidden deep inside of it, but additionally requires a serial number on the actual hardware. Mine didn't work. So I was informed to call Archos to get it to work.

I also tried it on a Macintosh and found out later that the plugins don't copy properly on a Macintosh to the Archos TV + and they end up getting corrupted. Had to reformat the hard drive. Then run it through Windows. With the $89 worth of plug-ins installed I went to play video and the video did not work.

There is no refund for the plug-ins. Features that should be included in the product you pay extra for only to realize they don't work either.

Archos promises all sorts of pearls of wonderful options on their product and ultimately deliver junk - requesting you to buy more junk to get the original junk to work.

I will never buy another Archos product again.

Anybody out there thinking of purchasing an Archos TV+ 250 Gig or Other. Save yourself the aggravation and go and buy an apple product. I have spent countless hours on hold with Archos Customer Service only to get a rude and incompetent representative on to be rushed off the phone or hung up on without resolving the issue. The discounted price attracted me to this product but after having to buy a "plug-in" for every feature the Archos TV was advertised being capable of it was no longer a bargain and still did not perform the way they claimed it would. The product is a disaster but the disappointment over quality pails in comparison to the awful and I mean awful customer service. My unit also had a defective HDMI port out of the box. Archos sent me an RMA number with a label which I found out was not paid for when I got to UPS. So in addition to wasting my time I had to spend another $16.31 to ship the defective unit back to Archos. After three week of waiting I never received another unit and when I called Archos for an update (another hour and forty minutes on hold) they told me that they never received the defective unit. When I gave them a tracking number they then apologized and said they did receive the old unit but that the warehouse did not enter the info properly. Out of pure concern that none of my fellow man have to endure what I did with this company I strongly recommend that no one try and purchase any of the Archos products. And as the other reviews state, the products do not arrive looking or working as they are described on the site. I have since bought an apple tv an am refreshed to have a wonderful product with real customer service. Hope this was a big help to anyone considering dealing with that horrendous company.

Once I got the equipment set up correctly I found out that I needed to purchase an add on to be able to brouse the WEB so I went on line and purchased it and the instructions told me to go to a certain web site to download the software but when you followed the address it didn't show you anything about the download but just the home page for Archos. I bought this device mostly to watch TV shows on the web without having to connect the laptop to the TV. After purchasing the Internet plug in for an additional fee (not cheap), I found out it does not download the plug-in needed for by most network (ABC, CBS, FOX, etc.) sites. I also can't play Netflix on-line videos. I was able to play YouTube videos (not interested) and videos converted from my PC (not worth the time). I can play music from a shared directory on another PC on the network (easier to just plug in my iPod to the stereo) and pictures (kinda cool). Customer support is virtually non-existent. Basically the company appears to have moved on to their newer devices with no interest in helping folks with this clucker or developing a better browser that will load plugins to play better movies online. I don't even feel right trying to re-sell it to someone else. I wish I could get my money out of it or trade it for something more useful. Right now, it's a useless brick in my entertainment cabinet. So for now, we continue to setup the laptop each movie night and hook it up to the TV so we can do what I bought this to do.

Very Disappointed!!!

Number One reason why this device is crap is the way Archos has completely abandoned it: no updates to its firmware and most importantly its TV Guide which I have never seen function.
And as others have said making you pay more for codecs and an out of date & no longer updated webrowser is greed unbound. Hopefully some smart russian geek can create a better firmware since archos will never bother with it ever again.

As a DVR its lackluster at best and functions more like a VCR since you can't do simple functions like watch a recorded program while it is recording, so if you have it hooked to a cable box you are stuck unless you stop recording. My ten year old ReplayTV can do this simple DVR function and the guide is still supported.

The resolution at which it can record and display is horrid, it is best suited for a Standar Def tube or LCD no bigger than 26". What attracted me to the unit was that it had component IN but it can only record SD it wont even downgrade a HD signal from my HD cable box, I'm not sure why it even has an HDMI out [The recorded image is nasty on my 42" LCD]
It records to its hardrive in some strange divx format which I can only get VLC player to understand if you offload them off the archos, and it records onto the hard drive in the old FAT32 file system instead of newer NTFS so if recording passes more than 2gb [a little over an hour] it gets split to an even more usless .AV2 file which is unrecognizable. It can pass the files to a portable Archos unit very nicely and makes me wonder if that was its intended use.

The other aspects of the Archos are pointless, the opera browser is out of date and wont even play flash 10... Web Radio? you can get off the internet for free, WebTv? Its great if you want to watch the ottercam from San Diego Zoo, traffic cams in Amterdam or 3rd rate TV stations from 3rd world countries.

I can see why the price has fallen to under $100, where it origionally was over $300!
Archos should be ashamed of themselves.
